The Senators strong play of late has made the possibility of making the playoffs morph from a vague dream to a distinct possibility. With this, much speculation is being made as to the actions of management at the trade deadline, which is set for the 27th of February. Coming into the season, the general consensus was that Ottawa would be sellers at the deadline, already being decidedly out of the playoff race. Sens fans have every reason to thank and worship Eugene Melnyk, after all he saved the franchise from bankrupcy. Now of course you shouldn’t feel too bad for Mean Gene, he will make a princely sum if he ever sells the team after getting the franchise and the arena at a bargain bin prince in 2003 — debt free. Amidst all the congratulations surrounding the Binghamton Senators Calder Cup triumph is a chorus suggesting that the victory is a vindication for Brian Murray’s leadership. While a Calder Cup victory is a big step in the development for many of the Sens young players, let’s remember that Murray’s job is to build an NHL championship team, not an AHL championship team.
